Why Waiting for Your Annual Review Is Holding You Back

May 10, 2024 By Jacquie Peros Leave a Comment

Women during an annual performance review.Raise your hand if you love receiving feedback about yourself.

The truth is that unless we know for sure it’s positive, we don’t proactively seek feedback on a regular basis for fear of being judged or criticized.

Timely feedback can be a game changer for your career trajectory, so let’s discuss when and how to ask for constructive feedback.

I recently worked with a client who felt deflated when she wasn’t considered for an opportunity within her organization.  When I asked her about recent feedback, she said her annual review wasn’t going to take place for another 5 months.

The truth is that it’s essential to proactively ask for feedback on an ongoing basis rather than waiting for an annual review. I discussed a few reasons here on Instagram.

Aside from your annual review, check out below when and how to garner more feedback so you can accelerate your career trajectory.

1. Rocked a Meeting? Ask!
Have you ever walked out of a meeting feeling like you owned the room? It’s time to capitalize on that energy! Don’t wait for feedback to come to you – go get it. Take a moment to ask your colleagues or manager, “Hey, how’d I do?” Their insights can be invaluable for fine-tuning your skills and maintaining that momentum.

2. Completed a Successful Project? Inquire!
You just wrapped up a project with flying colors, and the buzz is electric. Reach out to your manager or teammates and inquire, “How did I manage this project?” Getting feedback while the project is still fresh is like having a roadmap to success – it helps you navigate your career journey with precision.

Why the Hype for Real-Time Feedback?
Waiting around for that once-a-year review feels outdated. In today’s fast-paced world, seizing feedback in the moment is a career differentiator. By actively seeking feedback along the way, you’re crafting a personalized growth journey tailored to your ambitions. It’s about evolving and perfecting in real time, not waiting for validation once a year.

If you want to get feedback on your personal brand and industry reputation, I have the tool for you! The 360Reach Personal Branding Survey enables you to get the true story about how those around you perceive you. Also, it provides you with insights and feedback on how to build your brand and advance your career.   Send me an email at jmp@jmpbranding.com if you want to learn more.  You can also connect with me on my social media channels noted below.
