With only a few weeks into 2020, I’ve heard many friends and family talk about their resolutions and bet on whether or not they stick to them! Admittedly, I am not a resolutions person. In the past, I found that if I didn’t stick to my resolutions, it would only make me feel bad about myself, and life is too short to carry around those feelings! So instead, I simply jot down a few things I feel I need to work on, whether that’s personal or professional, and then check in with myself a few times a month and adjust accordingly. No pressure, no negative talk, no disappointment.
If you ask my close friends what my mantra is, they would immediately say, “I’m a work in progress until the day I die” (I recognize this might seem a bit dramatic (the until I die part), but to me, it simply means a lifelong journey. I’m always working on myself and learning from situations I either put myself in or find myself in. Sometimes I handle it OK, and sometimes not OK, but at least I’m learning and adjusting. Looking at the positive perspective helps to fend off any negative self-talk that might set it.
So in the year 2020, I urge you to eliminate resolutions that can potentially set you up for disappointment and negative self-talk. Instead, be kind to yourself, be positive ABOUT yourself, and make an investment in yourself, however small or large you need it to be!
